The Wind Champion of CUDL 2021!
8/27/21
To borrow Evan Lepler's apt summary: week twelve was nuts.
We expected some good games, but we didn't expect this.
Sure, The Wind was the favorite to win anyway, but we didn't foresee it happening in mostly dark conditions, fighting for their lives against a seed-three team that had just beat them.
Not after that seed-three Hammertime had just beaten the Turtles in overtime, meaning they had been playing hard for two-and-a-half hours before playing the third game against Gray.
No, we didn't expect Hammertime's virtually unstoppable defense and powerful offense to hold up this long. But it did, up until the very end, when a defensive break scored Hammertime's final point against the Wind as time expired. The Wind has been unstoppable all season, and only Red has broken their streak. Even so, it came right down to the wire as Hammertime beat Wind 14-13, only to finally lose steam in the five-minute tie-breaker. Wind beat Hammertime
2-1 in Champion-level overtime.
Congratulations, Wind. You've done it again.
The awards ceremony ended with Abram McCoy taking home the trophy, and several other players received various other awards and recognitions. The end of the first-ever CUDL season has the teams ranked as such:
Seed four: Purple Landsharks; overall record: 0-11-0.
Seed three: The Steal Turtles; overall record: 7-5-0.
Seed two: Hammertime; overall record: 6-8-0.
Seed one: The Wind; overall record: 12-1-0.
Congratulations to everyone involved in CUDL 2021! We'll see you next year!
