What to expect in 2025
What's new, what's changing, what's the same.
Honestly, it feels like after four years we're finally starting to get the hang of things. If it ain't broke don't fix it, so a lot is staying relatively the same from last year. Even so, we've thought a lot about the feedback we received after our last year. Below is a summary of what we've decided, from the playing field and game times, to epic playoff tournaments and new leaders at CUDL.
Rules
First things first!
Last year, CUDL officially adopted the USA Ultimate rulebook. USAU better lends itself to amateur play, and is more customizable to our specific needs. More importantly, Spirit of the Game is very clearly outlined in the rules. Spirit of the Game is the core of ultimate disc and lines up closely with Christian values of honesty and integrity.
Last year worked pretty well, but there are a few rules to tweak. For example:
- Brick marks will be officially eliminated from CUDL.
- Language surrounding the start of the clock after a pull will be clarified. Time will start when the disc is put in play, not when it is pulled.
- Language surrounding checking in after a stoppage of time will be clarified. After any stoppage of time (fouls, injuries, timeouts, disputes, giraffes on the field, etc.), the offense is required to wait for the defense to set up before "checking in."
Playoff Tourney Event
We need to come up with a better name for this.
In an effort to shorten the season and make the playoffs more enjoyable for all our players, we will be condensing the last two weeks of the playoffs into one big event. This will take place on Saturday, July 26th, running from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The semifinals and consolation games will be held from 9:30 - 11:00. From 11:00 -12:00, we'll have free pizza, concessions, activities for the Youth League, and some fun games. At noon, the CUDL2025 Championship game will kick off.

The whole day will also serve as a fundraiser, the proceeds of which are donated to local charities, nonprofits, and Christian organizations at the end of the year. CUDL has worked with Fellowship of Christian Athletes for the past two years. This year, we're considering sponsoring Faith Night at KCAC.
Youth League
The CUDL Youth League seemed to work well last year, so we're keeping it for the foreseeable future. The Youth League will be organized and implemented by Brennon Huff this year. He was instrumental in running it last year, and he's got some pretty good plans for it this year as well. The setup will still be extremely casual— different teams every week with an emphasis on scrimmage time— but kids will also take part in a brief lesson each week to help them learn the basics of Ultimate. We're confident it'll be a blast— you can sign up here!
The goal is let kids have a fun time, encourage the basic skills of Ultimate, and give younger kids a chance to be a part of CUDL. Admission is totally free, and registration isn't required (though highly recommended).
The Youth League is for children aged 7 - 13.
Venue
If the Lord wills, we will continue playing at Mack Park for the next several years. IRMC officially bought Mack Park over the summer, but has indicated that all current activities will be allowed to stay. If this is your first year with us, we play over by the fairgrounds. Mack Park is really an ideal location for us— we're so glad we get to play here!
Teams
We are expecting at least 100 players again this year. Last year we easily reached our 8-team goal, but still had some room to grow. So far it looks like we will... As of January, we've seen a 20% increase in sign-ups over last year, including a larger-than normal number of new players. Keep spreading the word! 96 players would keep us at 8 teams.
Signups open October 1st, 2024, and run through April 18th, 2025. Sign up now!!
Season
The CUDL 2024 season will be one week shorter than previous years in an effort to conserve both heat and light. Most games are held on Fridays, but three games will be held on Saturdays. Check the full schedule here.
Leaders
We're looking for several people to step up and take on leadership responsibilities in CUDL. These roles would range from running our social media to Treasurer of CUDL. While each leader would have his or her own responsibility to attend to, the leaders would also be collectively responsible for making bigger planning decisions as well. If you are interested in leading CUDL, please talk with one of us.

The goal in all of this is primarily to ease our workload and enable us to step away if needed without leaving a huge workload for others to pick up. When we started the league four years ago, we knew we couldn't keep running it forever. This is the first step towards making CUDL less dependent on the four of us (Henry, Evan, Abram, and Brennon) and more sustainable for the future.
