CUDL 2024 Power Rankings - Week 4 Edition

Hello again and welcome to this edition of the CUDL 2024 Power Rankings.  Last week’s slate of games delivered plenty of excitement!  The Mighty Mighty Tugboats made a convincing statement with their 17-9 win over the Disc-iples, arguing for the top spot in the rankings.  Then, the Scoobers and Green Eggs and Hammers both won from 6th and 7th in the ranking, games which some expected them to lose.  Now we have four teams sitting at .500 and the league feels wide open for more shake ups after our week 5 matchups.

Methodology:

This week I’m going mainly with my gut, as well as with some input from other voices around the league.

Rankings:

8: Hammertime 0-3-1 ←→ 0

Hammertime dropped another game this past week, losing a tough one to the Golden Scoobers.  According to captain Brennon Huff, the team is “really struggling right now.”  Some folks around the league would rank them as high as fourth based on their roster, but they just can’t seem to find a way to win.  With their current record, I can’t place them any higher than 8th.  Their next matchup is against the Disc-iples, who have been struggling, so they may have an opportunity to snag a W and show off the skill that many think this team has.

7: The Wind 1-3-0: ↓ 2

Another week, another tough loss for The Wind. Let’s look at the bright side though, they’ve had one of the most difficult schedules to start the season, facing the top three ranked teams in as many weeks.  Now they can look forward to a potentially easier schedule ahead and add more to the win column.

6: Le ‘Flauge 2-2-0: ↓ 2

After losing to Green Eggs and Hammers this past week, they’re falling a couple spots in my rankings.  However, the 2-2 teams are very close in my opinion, and this was a very hard week to rank the teams.  Le ‘Flauge continues to have a great defense, with a league-leading 38 goals allowed.  Last week I wondered if the Eggs could put up more than 11, and no, Le ‘Flauge held them in check!  Let’s just hope that they can reinvigorate their offense this week against The Wind.

5: Green Eggs and Hammers 2-2-0: ↑ 2

Last week I wondered if this team could up their current momentum and they certainly delivered by beating Le ‘Flauge.  It was a close game, but the Eggs fought through what may be the best defense in the league to get back to .500.  This week they have a chance to really shake things up as they face the undefeated Landsharks.

4: Golden Scoobers 2-2-0: ↑ 2

The Scoobers fought off a Hammertime team desperate for a W and succeeded with a convincing 20-15 win.  That, along with their win over Green Eggs and Hammers, earns them the fourth spot in this week’s rankings.  Again, all four 2-2 teams are very close, but the Scoobers have a chance to separate themselves if they can find a way to beat the Mighty Mighty Tugboats this week in what could be a season-defining matchup for them.

3: Disc-iples 2-2-0: ↓ 1

The Disc-iples suffered a disheartening defeat at the hands of the Mighty Mighty Tugboats this past week, and have fallen to 3rd in the standings.  After a strong start to the season they’ve now dropped two in a row and haven’t shown that top-tier offense that put up 27 goals in week one.  As they prepare to face Hammertime, I want to know whether they will bring back that offensive magic and show that they belong in the conversation for the top team in the league, or will they let Hammertime get their first win and fall into the midfield?

2: Mighty Mighty Tugboats 3/1/0: ↑ 1

The Mighty Mighty Tugboats put the league on notice with their emphatic 17-9 win over the Disc-iples last week.  They are cooking on both sides of the disc, with a league-leading +20 goal differential.  Right now they seem unstoppable.  Ben Peng certainly thinks they may be the best team in the league, saying, “We’re top two,” and citing their large goal margins.  Nathan Williams is also confident in his team, declaring “We’re the best team, there’s no question.”

1: Landsharks 3/0/1: ←→ 0

The Landsharks stayed on top of the standings after a win over The Wind, and so stay at the top of the power rankings.  They may not have the best offense or the best defense, but they continue to put it together on the field when it matters. However, as Nathan Williams points out, “Purple has not blown out anybody yet.”  We’ll have to see if Green Eggs and Hammers can knock them out of the top spot this week.
