CUDL 2024 Power Rankings - First Edition, Week 3
Welcome to the first edition of this year’s CUDL power rankings. Now that we are three weeks into the season we have a clearer picture of where all the teams stack up against each other. As you know, each year the teams are shuffled with a fresh draft, and the early games are the proving grounds for getting to know your new teammates and develop chemistry. The proverbial wrench in the works for 2024 was the tremendous amount of rain leading up to weeks 1 and 2. All the teams struggled to find their footing and wins had to be dug out of the mud. In fact, April was the wettest April in Indiana County’s history according to the NOAA with over 8” of rainfall. The next couple of weeks we will see how everyone fares on steadier ground and more time with their team.
Methodology:
I’ve tried to rank the teams as objectively as possible, using the stats CUDL is able to track: wins, loses, goals scored, and goals against.
First, I sort teams by their records. Teams with the same record are then sorted by their point differential, with head-to-head games considered.
Rankings:
8: Hammertime 0-2-1
Led by Brennon Huff, hammertime is the only winless team after three games. Don’t let that fool you though, they have not actually lost all their games, they took the Landsharks to the bell and tied that game after being down by three goals. This is a team to watch down the stretch, with a point differential of only -4 and a solid roster. If their early season missteps were due to the mud, they could be poised for a hot-streak.
7: Green Eggs and Hammers 1-2-0
After suffering a hard defeat at the hands of the Disc-iples in the season opener, they’ve steadily improved their box scores. Week 2 saw them lose by only two points, and they followed that up with their first win last week against Hammertime. If they can keep the momentum building, Le Flauge will have a tough time against them in their week 4 matchup.
6: Scoobers 1-2-0
The Scoobers sit solidly in the middle of the one win crowd. They’ve beaten the Green Eggs and Hammers, but fell to The Wind in week 1. Looking solely at the goals scored in their games, the Scoobers are only a few breaks away from being a 3-0 team. Keep an eye on them to see if they can bust the .500 mark over the coming weeks.
5: The Wind 1-2-0
The Wind, captained by Abram McCoy, would love to forget the past two weeks. After opening with a solid win over the Scoobers, they’ve suffered two hard defeats dropping their point differential to -16. However, there’s still plenty of season remaining to recapture some of that week 1 magic.
4: Le Flauge 2-1-0
Le Flauge may have suffered the most in early May’s mud, scoring only three goals in their week 2 struggle against the Mighty Mighty Tugboats. Don’t let that single game fool you though, their point differential is only -6 and they have a solid defense (no one has allowed fewer goals so far this season). It will be exciting to see if their week 4 opponent Green Eggs and Hammers can score more than the eleven that Hammertime put up on this defense in week 1.
3: Mighty Mighty Tugboats 2-1-0
After a tough loss to the Landsharks in week 1, the Tugboats have been on a tear, out-mudding Le Flauge in week 2, and putting on a scoring clinic of 20 points in week 3 (that’s the second highest score so far this season). Their week 4 match-up against the Disc-iples is likely to be an instant classic, and we will get a chance to see which team’s offense is the real deal.
2: Disc-iples 2-1-0
The Disc-iples are 2024’s offensive powerhouse, scoring more points so far than any other team. Their defense is serious also, standing at second in the league with only 28 points allowed. It looked like nothing could stop them until they ran into the Landsharks in week 3. They don’t have much time to recover though, as fellow 2-1 team the Mighty Mighty Tugboats will be looking for another win themselves in their week 4 match-up.
1: Landsharks 2-0-1
The Landsharks stand at the top of the rankings not only due to the zero in their loss column, but also that they’ve beaten both the Mighty Mighty Tugboats and the Disc-iples. Their zone defense is proving to be a tough nut to crack, holding the Disc-iples to ten goals (their season worst single-game score). Offensively, they are only third in total goals scored, but that’s been enough to earn the top spot in the standings.
