CUDL 2022 WEEK 7

Henry Rummel - 7.7.22

First impressions

Week seven was full of surprises.

Going into week seven, I'll admit I thought I knew what would happen. The Scoobers were going to narrowly beat gray again, just as they did six weeks prior; The (2-4) Hammers didn't have a chance against the undefeated Turtles; the win between the Landsharks and Hammertime was up for grabs.

But I was wrong. Once again, CUDL proved to us that anything could happen.

What Happened?

     Allow me to quote myself:

"The Turtles are the team to beat- but which team can get the consistency

and accuracy to finally take down the reptilian empire?"

I must admit that when I wrote those words two weeks ago, I did think that such a team existed in CUDL 2022. I thought it would surely be one of the three teams tied for second place- Hammertime, the Lansharks, or the Wind. All three of those teams had beat Green Eggs and Hammers. All three had lost to the Turtles. All three have solid rosters and a pretty good chance of beating Teal... someday. I still believe that. Week seven proved that the Turtles are not impregnable.

     Not anymore, anyway.

Allow me to quote myself again:

"The Hammers have quite possibly the best collection of potential in the league. Their goal: harness it."

Green Eggs and Hammers upset everyone's expectations- of the turtles, certainly, but also of themselves. The Hammers have won their last two games, both by huge margins. They beat Yellow by a legendary 18 points. Then, they shattered the reptilian empire in a 15-7 rout. It was quite amazing to watch them play. Green was consistent and precise- but I don't think that's what won them the game.

Green capitalized on the break. It's one of the most important aspects of defensive Ultimate, and the Hammers nailed it. When Teal made a mistake, Green didn't. Time and time again, The Hammers would force an error, then play the disc smoothly for the next point.

     Again.

     And again.

Until the final whistle blew, and the score was 15-7 in Green's favor.

The other two games were perhaps not quite as incredible but were outstanding nonetheless.

Yellow went into the game against an under-staffed Gray team, thinking they would come out with their second win. The end of the first quarter was 5-2 Gray. It didn't get much better. The Wind may not have had their full roster, but they had enough to force huge mismatches. The Wind stamped down their third win of the season 14-7 over the Scoobers. The Wind is still tied for second, placed below Hammertime by only a few total points.

The Scoobers, on the other hand, are now (1-6-0). But they still have a chance- they came within only one point of Purple last time. What will they do in week eight?

The Purple v Red game went pretty much as expected- in that we didn't know what to expect. These two teams are very well-matched. They played earlier in the season and tied at 14. What would happen this time? Hammertime led the entire game, but hardly ever by much more than one point and never by more than three. However, a few key errors by the Landsharks gave Hammertime a two-point lead late in the fourth quarter that Purple couldn't quite overcome. Both teams played exceptionally well, but in the end, Hammertime's unrelenting offense outlasted Purple's.

At (2-3-2), Purple has dropped to fifth in the standings. However, a win for Purple against Yellow and a Red loss would put them back in the top three. It really is a close race.

Hammertime keeps second place but faces off with Teal this Friday. After a crushing defeat, we have to wonder: will this light a fire under Teal? Or will it halt their gameplay altogether? Can Hammertime pull off a win against a team with only one loss? If they do, it would be a massive victory for them- it would almost guarantee them the second seed.

final buzzer:

Who knows? The differences between second and fifth places are slim. Seeds will shuffle in the last two weeks of regular season play. The second seed is a position to be fought after- the first and second placeswill get an easier shot at the championship.

CUDL 2022 Week 8 calls to us. What it holds? More surprises, I'm sure.

We'll see you there!
