This week's Playoff Picture is written by TJ Jackson. Where does each team stand with one week left in the regular season?
This is it! One final game before the playoffs begin! Just like the temperatures outside, the competition has been heating up each week. Every team has one last chance to grab another W, to find that offensive rhythm, or to tweak their defense before playoffs. Well, everyone except the Disc-iples, who have a bye. Starting with them, let’s take a look at where each team stands right now.
--
The Disc-iples have been solid all year and are deserving of their current top spot. Unfortunately, there’s no way for them to keep the top spot after this week’s upcoming games. No matter what happens, they’ll be second or third. If Panic at the Disco defeats Olive the Glory, then the Disc-iples will finish in second place behind the winner of the Scoober Divers and Golden Soobers game. If Olive wins, then Orange will finish third. Looking back, they’ve had a fantastic season, with lots of big wins and solid defensive showings. Last week’s victory over the Mighty Mighty Tugboats was what they needed to put the big loss to the Scoober Divers behind them. Now they can rest and prepare for the quarterfinals. Even though they won’t be the number one seed for playoffs, they surely have their eyes on the championship.
Last week’s one seed, Olive the Glory finds themselves back at number two after being unable to score more than the Landsharks in a week 8 tie. They do, however, have the power to put themselves on top for the playoffs if they are able to dispatch Panic. If they win this week, they secure the top seed for the playoffs, setting up what should be the easiest road to the finals. If they lose, they’ll drop to the three seed behind both Scoober(s) teams. They’ve now had one loss and two ties after their roaring 4-0 start, and the questions are looming. Can they turn it around and close out strong? Will they continue to struggle to find their groove? Will they just take it easy in week 9, knowing that they’re already in the playoffs? I suspect that they’ll go all out this week, and aim for all of the glory.
The Golden Scoobers are in third place right now, still holding on to a chance to snatch the top seed if Panic can take down Glory. After watching the Disc-iples and Scoober Divers secure week 8 wins, the Scoobers must be kicking themselves for dropping that week 7 game to the Tugboats. Now they’re locked in for the “Battle of the Scoobs”, my game of the week, for a chance at first place. If they lose to the Divers, they’ll drop to fourth, and if they win they will take first or second place depending on Glory’s result against Panic. No matter how it shakes out, they are still in a good position to make a push for the championship.
The Scoober Divers keep their fourth place position heading into the last week of the regular season. And much like the Golden Scoobers, they still have a shot at taking the top seed. In order to do it, they need to win this week and get help from Panic. Their worst case scenario however, is a loss to Yellow and Panic wins, which would see Teal drop to fifth! The team is looking hot right now, so I wouldn’t bet against them. They are +27 in point differential since their week 6 bye, giving them confidence in their championship hopes.
Panic at the Disco picked up another solid win, but unfortunately won’t move much higher in the standings with one week to play. They are positioned to play upset to Glory’s top seed hopes however, but even a win means they need Teal to lose in order to climb to fourth. The past four weeks have seen Panic accumulate a +34 point differential, solidly positioning them above the bottom of the pack, but they still haven’t defeated a team ranked higher than themselves. Is their offense good enough to best Olive’s stifling defense? Can Panic’s defense make that next step to solidify their playoff hopes? I think this week will really show us if they are a championship caliber team.
The Committee for Disc Retention has been the master of close games this season. Their inability to close out the close games leaves them on top of a three-team scramble for 6th. If they hold off The Wind they take the six seed, but if they lose they will drop to seventh or eighth depending on the outcome of the MMT/PLS game. It may not matter much though, as they’ve gone blow for blow with all three teams at the top of the order. Taking Olive and Teal to ties, and losing to Yellow by only three points should give them tons of confidence no matter who they face in the playoffs. As long as they can shake off their blowout loss to Panic, they will cause a lot of trouble for any of their opponents. The Committee is my pick for a quarterfinal upset.
The Mighty Mighty Tugboats find themselves in the middle of the fight for the six seed. They need to beat the Landsharks and see The Wind defeat the Committee to secure sixth. More likely is that they will finish seventh or eighth depending on their result against the ‘Sharks. Their prospects of making a deep playoff run are looking slim, but they’ve played well against most of the top teams, despite not snagging wins. The win against the Golden Scoobers shows their upside and they’ll need to harness that energy when it’s time for the quarterfinals.
The Landsharks are in the same boat as Blue. If they win they still need Red to lose to Gray in order to have the six seed. If Red wins this week, they will have seventh or eighth depending on their result against Blue. The Landsharks have been inconsistent, but have shown flashes of potential. A big win over Gray was good, but last week they held Olive to a tie, showing that they can hang in there with the better teams, especially when they have their full team. I’m not sure that they can make it out of quarters, but their playoff opponents need to take them seriously, I still think this is a better team than their record shows. Keep an eye on their week 9 matchup.
Unfortunately, The Wind has been eliminated with one more week remaining in the regular season. They were unable to snag the win they needed from The Scoober Divers in order to stay alive. Their final match of the season is against the Committee, and Gray can play spoiler and push Red back to seventh or eighth.
My predictions for the final regular season standings:
Olive the Glory
The Scoober Divers
The Disc-iples
The Golden Scoobers
Panic at the Disco
The Committee for Disc Retention
The Mighty Mighty Tugboats
The Purple Landsharks
The Wind
