TJ Jackson looks ahead to the CUDL 2026 playoffs. What does each team need to do to win it all?

CUDL 2026 Playoff Picture Week 8

Olive the Glory are looking strong on top of the standings with two weeks to go. They’ve already locked down a playoff spot and are surely focused on staying number one. They may be feeling the pressure though, as they’ve dropped two close games after their roaring four win start to the season.  Losing a close game to third-ranked Disc-iples and tying seventh-ranked The Committee could mean that the rest of the league has figured them out… or maybe it’s just a speed bump on the way to a championship.  They just need wins against the underrated Landsharks and the resurgent Panic to lock up that top seed for the championship bracket.

Could we have another back-to-back champion? The Golden Scoobers are certainly looking like it’s possible.  They are in contention for the top seed heading to the playoffs by boasting the league’s top scoring offense. They might be showing cracks though, as they’ve now lost to sixth-ranked Tugboats, failed to best Olive the Glory, and survived the Disc-iples by only one point in week five. Unfortunately for the rest of the league, they get to rest this week before their final regular season game against the Scoober Divers. That exciting matchup will certainly have playoff ramifications!

The Disc-iples, our second 5-2 team, are only a couple turnovers away from being the top seed right now. With two more points against the Golden Scoobers, they’d be sitting dominant on top of the rankings.  All season they’ve looked excellent, especially on the defensive side of the disc (very disciplined, one might say)!  However, there are a lot of questions after last week’s 22-9 loss to the Scoober Divers.  Is this a fluke, or did the Disc-iples peak too early? With a week nine bye, they have one more chance to remind everyone who’s the defensive boss, but the Tugboats will be looking to force an upset.

Ranked fourth right now is the team with the best name in CUDL history, the Scoober Divers.  They still mathematically have a shot at the top seed, but they need a lot of help.  They need to win out the rest of the season, beating both a hungry The Wind and a tough Golden Scoobers.  They would also need Tugboats to beat the Disc-iples and Panic to beat Olive the Glory. It’s a long shot for all of this to fall into place for them.  Can they make a run on the championship though?  Their record at the beginning of the year was good, but they were a handful of points away from starting 0-5.  However, their dominating performance against the Disc-iples last week has definitely gotten everyone’s attention.  If they can steal the second or third seed for playoffs, they may steamroll to the 2026 final.

The most improved team so far this season just may be Panic at the Disco. Am I biased? Probably. But after a rough 0-3 start to the season including close games against the Golden Scoobers and the Scoober Divers, they’ve tallied three solid wins to get back to .500. Their offense is formidable, paving the way for solid wins in the middle of the season. But they have serious challenges ahead on the road to the playoffs.  This week The Committee will be fighting to avoid another tie, and Olive the Glory could end Panic’s regular season with some humble pie.  Panic could land anywhere between the third and seventh seed for playoffs, but the ceiling is certainly the title.

The Mighty Mighty Tugboats are having a tough time sailing this year.  They’ve had a big win, a big loss, a tie, and a couple very close games on their way to their 2-3-1 record.  Clear skies might be on the horizon for them however, if they can generate momentum from their victory over the Golden Scoobers last week.  They could certainly spoil the end of the season for the Disc-iples or the ‘Sharks, and if they can put it all together, they’ll ruin someone’s championship hopes.

The Committee for Disc Retention may be having the most frustrating season of any team this year, being just three points away from a 4-2 record and a chance at the top spot. As it stands, their best possible seeding for playoffs is fourth, but they need a lot of luck for that. Like with every other team, if they can just sort out their turnover issues and retain possession, they have a chance to get past the quarterfinals on July 17.  They have been shockingly close to beating the current top ranked teams, and I don’t envy their opponents in the playoffs.

Plagued by injuries and vacations, the Landsharks have been struggling all season.  Their only win has been against bottom-ranked The Wind, but they did force the Scoober Divers to a stalemate early in the season.  Their roster is good, and if they can get all their players on the field together they would punish any team that didn’t take them seriously.  They are not yet a lock for the final playoff spot however! They need one more win or tie to guarantee at least eighth, so they need to dig deep in the last couple weeks of the regular season.

Bottom-ranked The Wind are having a season that they’d surely love to redo. But coming off a bye-week, might they blow away an unpredictable Scoober Divers team and take their first win?  They still have a shot at the final playoff spot if the Landsharks cannot find another win, so the motivation should be there.  They also have had flashes of brilliance, in their week five contest against Panic, they mounted a fourth quarter comeback by breaking three times in a row for a four-point streak.  So they have the potential for strong offense and defense, but can they make it last an entire game before the season’s over?  Don’t count them out yet, I ain’t heard no bell.

End of Season Predictions:

1st: Olive the Glory

2nd: The Scoober Divers

3rd: The Golden Scoobers

4th: Disc-iples

5th: Panic at the Disco

6th: Mighty Mighty Tugboats

7th: The Committee for Disc Retention

8th: The Landsharks

9th: The Wind
