Review and analysis of the opening weeks of the CUDL2026 season.
First Impressions
The first few weeks of CUDL always fascinate me. There is always much speculation prior to the first game; many predictions are made and rosters are thoroughly analyzed. Some were even brave enough to rank the nine CUDL2026 competitors before athletes ever set foot upon the playing field. Yet after the first few weeks, we always look back and count ourselves foolish for ever thinking we knew what was to be. And thus these first few weeks fascinate me.
CUDL2026 is off to a great start. We've seen huge wins, down-to-the-wire finishes, and even several ties. It's been unpredictable, exciting, and fun. Let's dive in.
What Happened?
After four weeks of ultimate, there is much data to unpack. I will cover each team briefly, starting with the lowest seed and progressing upwards.
The Wind (0-4-0)
At (0-4-0), winless Wind has a lot of work to do if they want to make the playoffs this year. As much as I hate making statements like that this early in the season, I suspect it is true. Gray cannot afford another loss if they want a winning season. They are averaging fewer than 8 points per game, while allowing 18. Their defense is meager, their offense undisciplined. Even so, I suspect Wind is better than their flailing record suggests- or at least, they could be. We saw glimpses of that this past Friday against Purple. Several times, the Landsharks drove down the field, only to be stymied repeatedly by Gray's red zone defense. Gray had moments of greatness on offense as well, and racked up their highest point total of the season— almost double their previous average. There is no lack of talent on Gray, merely a lack of coordinated play. Discipline on offense and a more aggressive defense are the keys Gray needs to turn their season around.
Panic at the Disco (0-3-0)
Panic will not stay in the eighth position for very long, that we can be sure of. Prior to the season, Ira and I ranked the nine CUDL2026 teams based our combined knowledge of the players, captains, and likely strategies at play. I ranked them eighth. Ira ranked them fifth. After a few weeks of watching them play, I feel confident that they could be placed much higher, potentially third or fourth. Pink has a highly skilled, well-rounded roster, and the captainship of TJ Jackson is perfect for this team. They took the Scoober Divers to the wire in their latest matchup, which I believe is a huge testament to Pink's ability and skill. This is a team that will certainly keep on improving, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Despite sitting in 8th place, this team is a real championship threat.
The Committee for Disc Retention (0-2-1)
After three games, Red has remained winless. On paper, they're nothing fantastic— statistics show a middling defense, and a slightly below average offense, elo, and AdjMOV. Even so, The Committee is another sneakily underrated team. They've played the hardest schedule in CUDL, losing to two of the top three teams and tying the fourth. Their latest game, a 10-11 thriller against top-seeded Orange, exhibited impressive technical play that put them within spitting distance of a massive upset. There can be no doubt that The Committee has the skills needed to play competitively against the top teams. They'll have improvements to make, certainly, but for now I am satisfied with their position. They have the perfect get-right game this Saturday against the Tugboats, a game I feel confident they can win.
Mighty Mighty Tugboats (1-2-0)
In all honesty, I have not seen much of the Tugboats' games yet this season. However, after three games, I can safely say that the Tugboats must make some changes if they want to remain Mighty. In past years, Blue has relied on sheer athleticism, a fast-paced offense, and stiff man defense to overwhelm opponents and win games. But the first looks at this year's team seem to imply that this strategy isn't a very viable solution for CUDL2026. Blue doesn't match up perfectly against teams like Orange or Green. Their fast-paced offense is creating more turnovers than points. It is my opinion that the 2026 Tugboats are more akin to the 2025 Landsharks or Wind. They'll have to tighten up their defense and slow down their offense if they want to be successful in this league. Their week five matchup against the slow, methodical Red should be a perfect chance for them to practice just that.
Landsharks (1-2-1)
The Landsharks were highly touted prior to the season; early estimates placed them finishing second or third overall. However, Purple has not had quite the beginning of the season many were expecting. To be sure, they have improved significantly since their week one loss to Orange. Their 18-point game in week 4 was their highest total to date; and their defense truly started to show signs of life. Further, both their losses come to top-three teams, and they tied the fourth seed Scoober Divers in week 2.
But with that said, one win against the bottom-ranked team isn't good enough. If the Landsharks want to be contenders in any sense, they'll need to improve in a lot of ways, and quickly. The Landsharks rank 7th in offensive power, defensive power, and AdjMOV. Those are not favorable statistics.
The Landsharks have a bye this week. Hopefully, they can use the rest to refine their strategies and get their act together before a week 6 game against Red.
Scoober Divers (2-0-2)
Fourth place is not an accurate depiction of how good the Scoober Divers are. At (2-0-2), they are literally 2 points away from first place. They tied Purple in week 2 and Red in week 3. They scored a monstrous 23 points against Pink in week 4, and sit tied for second in offensive power. Teal wins games on offense, and their powerhouse offense has made this team a serious threat, averaging very nearly 17 points per game. Looking at athleticism alone, this team has perhaps the best roster in recent CUDL history. However, many have pointed out the team's lack of discipline, especially on the defensive side of the disc. Teal has allowed nearly 16 points per game to opposing offenses, third worst in the league. To add insult to injury, they've allowed those points to relatively poor offenses— they've faced the second easiest schedule of any team thus far. Ira Sickles astutely pointed out before the season that
[Teal] IS crazy... I just can't see them losing any games. They could just play man defense on everyone and nobody would have a single favorable matchup. Also, Jacob Henninger is one of IUP's better players and a handler. To throw him in there as well kinda blows my mind.
Well... Teal hasn't lost any games yet. Technically, they remain undefeated. But they'll have to discipline themselves and clean up their defensive act if they want a chance at the CUDL2026 title.
Golden Scoobers (3-1-0)
Nobody really thought the Scoobers would be as good as they were through the first three weeks of the season, so their week four loss against Green didn't really come as a surprise to me. The undefeated high could only last so long. With that said, the Scoobers truly have played exceptionally well this season. They ended last season with the hottest offense in CUDL, and they've kept that energy in the first few weeks of this season. They're scoring the most points per game of any CUDL2026 team, while maintaining a decent defense. Their downfall is an occasional lack of consistency and discipline. This is precisely what handed them their first loss last Friday. As one player put it after the game,
[Olive the Glory] didn't beat us... we beat ourselves.
All of that is to say that the Scoobers have once again put together a wonderful team with true championship potential. I would really like to see some improvements in the mental side of the game before placing any bets on them, however.
The Scoobers' week five showdown with the Disc-iples will be the perfect test. Is Yellow's undefeated start a fluke? Or do the Scoobers have a legitimate chance of being Golden once again?
Olive the Glory (3-0-0)
If I had to name a championship winner today, it would almost certainly have to go to Green. Pre-season, I ranked this team second overall, with the caveat that they might be #1 if Teal couldn't discipline themselves. given Teal's questionable defense, Olive the Glory is my pick to win the CUDL2026 title.
Green has not lost yet this season. They've delivered appropriately dominant performances in every game they've played, besting Wind by 10 points, Tugboats by 6 points, and the previously-one-seed Golden Scoobers by 6 points. They boast a solid handler lineup and an impressive cutting squad, including multiple deep threats that pose massive problems for opposing defenses. Their defense is currently second-best in the league, and they rank first in both elo and AdjMOV.
Green may drop a game or two throughout the season, but in my opinion this is the team to watch.
Disc-iples (4-0-0)
The Disc-iples are at it again. Over the last four years, the Disc-iples have proven themselves to be an absolute powerhouse on both sides of the disc. At (4-0-0), Orange doesn't seem to have any intentions of stopping. So far this season, they've averaged 15 points per game, while allowing only 8. However, further scrutiny shows us that this team may not be the juggernaut their record makes them out to be.
The Disc-iples have faced by far the easiest schedule in the league. But while they have shown some dominant performances— 18-4 over Wind, 13-6 over Panic— they've also fallen short in areas a championship-caliber team must not fall short. They allowed 12 points in their season opener against the Landsharks, double the total allowed by third-ranked Yellow. They very nearly lost their game against seventh-seed Red last week, pulling off the win by one point at the buzzer.
Perhaps I am being over-critical. Perhaps these are merely early-season wrinkles which will iron themselves out as the season progresses. I certainly hope so. If they do, the Disc-iples have an extremely good shot at some playoff redemption and their first championship title.
The Call
It is my habit to make an educated guess as to what the ending scores of next weeks games will be. This is merely my opinion, and I am often woefully mistaken.
